Losing a pet involves several levels of grief, and is different for everyone. Some people connect with a pet loss counselor, while others may get a pet memorial tattoo. But a growing field has provided people with a new way to connect with their lost pets: by using a pet psychic.

What Is a Pet Psychic?

A pet psychic, sometimes called an animal communicator or intuitive, is someone who says they can tune into the energy, emotions or spirit of an animal. Sometimes these animals are alive and the pet psychic can share with you what the pets are thinking. But in other cases, the pet psychic may say they can connect with pets in the afterlife.

What Happens During the Session?

During a pet psychic session, the communicator may ask for a photo of the pet, their name, or a personal item that belonged to them, such as a dog bed. From there, they may describe the pet’s personality, habits or quirks. Then they may segue into describing how the pet passed away, whether they suffered, and where their spirit is now.

Although not everyone is confident that pet psychics can connect people with their late pets, others believe it’s true. Even some celebrities who lost pets, such as Selma Blair and Cesar Milan, have used psychics to connect with them.

Readers’ Experiences With Pet Psychics

Some Pet Farewell readers have had positive experiences with animal communicators, while others say they wouldn’t do it again:

“I used a psychic to connect with my childhood dog, Muffin,” said Alex Towson of Louisville, Kentucky. “It wasn’t a pet psychic specifically, but she said she had experience connecting with animals. Unfortunately, she got every single detail wrong about my soul dog. I wouldn’t do it again.”

Tressa Solenz of San Diego, however, said she felt like her cat was in the room with her during her session. “I almost immediately could feel Trevor’s presence as soon as the psychic said he was with us,” she said. “And then she told me details only Trevor and I would have known, including the color of the pillow he was lying on when he passed. I have gone back three more times.”

Findley Marcus said connecting with his dog, Casper, gave him solace. “I always had a lot of guilt about whether it was time to put Casper down yet or not,” said Marcus, who used a pet psychic in his hometown of Columbus, Ohio. “I really felt like the communicator channeled Casper and I felt so much less guilty after the session. I now know Casper is at peace, and that gives me peace.”

Should You Get a Pet Psychic Reading?

If you want to connect with your late pet, it’s your decision to consider working with a pet psychic. If you do decide to, consider the following tips:

  • Look for testimonials or reviews from other pet owners.

  • If possible, get referrals from friends, local pet groups, or online pet grief communities.

  • Interview candidates to find out what you can (and can’t) expect from a session, and ensure they don’t promise “guaranteed proof” or exact timelines.

  • Beware of psychics who try to exploit your grief by upselling expensive packages, claiming your pet is “trapped,” or insisting you need more sessions to “free” them.

  • A genuine psychic will focus on comfort, healing and communication instead of fear tactics.

  • Trust your instincts. You should feel comfortable and respected during your interaction.

  • Look for basic professionalism: clear pricing, punctuality and respectful communication.

  • If possible, choose someone with a clear track record of working with animals, since the connection is different from human readings.
